A synthetic chemical similar to the active ingredient in marijuana makes new cells grow in rat brains. What is more, in rats this cell growth appears to be linked with reducing anxiety and depression. The results suggest that marijuana, or its derivatives, could actually be good for the brain.

Several years ago I heard of a study on the intellect of marijuana users vs non-users which concluded that a majority of users fell in the upper level of intelligence and a majority of non-users fell into the lower level.

I'm glad to see the facts coming out almost daily about the benefits of this plant.Keep up the good stories !

I understand there was a local news story here about the hospital working with hemp oil and cancer patients. When I find it I will let you know the details.

"Zhang says more research is needed before it is clear whether cannabinoids could some day be used to treat depression in humans"

No need to I have already done that and it works for me along with other sick and depressed people.

I am so glad science is putting more effort into research, but with so much coming out, why is the government still dragging it's feet!! Oh yea, to easy to grow and to hard to regulate.

It is interesting reading. I am disapointed that there is no response from David Suzuki though. He has had documentries on TV that support the medical use of hemp.

Anyone who has used marijuana to any extent knows damned well that marijuana is not the evil, destructive "devils' weed" that it has been labled as.

Many of my friends smoke regularly, and are well adjusted, happy, productive people. They...or rather "we" know that marijuana is stimulating for the mind, and it is not as dangerous as alcohol or tobacco.

When is the government going to wake up and realize that marijuana is not a problem drug like crack? When will they admit to the health benefits of canabis? When will they embrace the potential of hemp use on an industrial level?

When will they admit that it is time to legalize marijuana?
