Don't notice climate change yet? You will. »
Posted by: Wil 1 year, 7 months agoBruce Wielicki, Principal Investigator for CERES, a NASA project that uses Earth-orbiting satellites to monitor how clouds affect our climate. He writes, "Climate change is already here, it is above the natural variability of the climate system, and the greenhouse gases that we emit from burning fossil fuels are the primary reason."

I live in RI. Global warming says the ice caps melt and make the oceans colder. We had our first snow fall yesterday...I live ON the ocean. Sorry but we have had far more brutal winters than this. Our weather isnt falling into a pattern something may be happening but th weather is not steady enough to say what if anything. Sorry I live on the water the "epricenter" of climate shift and the sky isnt falling...go ahead and say not yet.

Oct 2002 "Our 14-year continuous weather station record from the shore of Lake Hoare reveals that seasonally averaged surface air temperature has decreased by 0.7 degrees Celsius per decade," they write. "The temperature decrease is most pronounced in summer and autumn. Continental cooling, especially the seasonality of cooling, poses challenges to models of climate and ecosystem change."
The findings are puzzling because many climate models indicate that the Polar regions should serve as bellwethers for any global warming trend, responding first and most rapidly to an increase in temperatures. An ice sheet many kilometers thick in places perpetually covers almost all of Antarctica.
They also note that the previous claims that Antarctic is warming may have been skewed because the measurements were taken largely on the Antarctic Peninsula...

They you go again, Spin Master Halko. You totally dismiss a report from Bruce Wielicki, Principal Investigator for the NASA CERES project studying climate change through the satellite measurement of clouds. You completely ignore the fact that he refers to the IPCC study http://www.ipcc.ch/ put forward by a group of the worlds most respected climate sscientists and subject to peer review.
Instead, you offer http://science.netscape.com/story/2007/02/02/russi . The original story comes from Russian propaganda outlet, NewsRU.com. It quoted ONE Russian astronomer (not climatologist) Khabibulo Absudamatov. This ONE scientist's nay-saying was picked up by the Intermountain Rural Electric Association, who put up $100,000 to encourage members of the press and scientists for sale to spread this bit of truthiness. See http://colorado.mediamatters.org/items/20060801000 for confirmation.

Who's waiting! Here it is again: "Following the recent publication of my letter in The Oracle (Mensa publication) concerning the use of Tin Foil Hats for the reduction of Global Warming I have been inundated by requests for a proper pattern to create an effective hat. My research has uncovered many fine designs with two of the best websites suggested here:
http://www.people.csail.mit.edu/rahimi/helmet/ The Centurion, The Fez and The Classical; these three fine Reynolds double tin foil hats are attractive, sporty and reflect dangerous rays back into the dark reaches of space where they belong while at the same time reducing Global Warming. For best results in reducing Global Warming wear continuously from Sun-up till Sundown. The newer "Al Gore" model is not yet in production and has so far proven to be dull, lifeless and not too effective."

PLEASE Folks! Let's all get on board with this tin hat deal. IMAGINE 280 Million sun ray reflecting hats in the U.S.A. alone. Other countries will be sure to follow. Russia will claim they invented it. Global warming will be stopped in its tracks.
Most people are not aware that a fine, nice looking and effective tin foil hat may actually be constructed using the plans for making a Paper Hat. Simply substitute tin foil or aluminum wrap for the paper required in the instructions for a paper hat and follow the directions. That is, just use tin foil instead of paper. http://www.ehow.com/how_414_make-paper-hat.html will lead the way to your ownership of a fine pointy topped tin foil hat that you can be proud to wear anywhere.

Landmark climate report: Clock is ticking
'It's later than we think,' U.S. scientist and panel co-chair says
PARIS - Global warming is so severe that it will "continue for centuries," leading to a far different planet in 100 years, warned a grim landmark report from the world's leading climate scientists and government officials. Yet, many of the experts are hopeful that nations will now take action to avoid the worst scenarios.

Only a fool would argue about an issue they know nothing about. But there are plenty of fools on the web. Global warming is real, it's caused by man, and the only data that says otherwise is the posts showing the "paid opinions" of the industrial lobby!

From personal observation over my 40 years of life I remember when I grew up in Wisconsin how the winters got milder and milder. We used to own snowmobiles and each year that passed we had less snow to ride them on. Until finally it got to the point that you would have a good riding year once every three years. I have since moved to Maryland and I can also say that the winters seem to get milder here every year. The ski hills in this area couldn't even make snow until 2 weeks ago because it wasn't cold enough.

Ah the religion of Global Warming.
With it's sinful acts,,, pollution, CFCs, Greenhouse Gases, clear Cutting
It's apocalyptic predictions,,, the Faith one must have of those standing at the podium telling that 'they and only they have the answer to their GOD' and no other view except the (It's all our fault) can be acceptable. Those that believe that yes there is warming but think maybe it's a natural thing and man isn't having as much affect as we are being told are the Apostates.
The same power structures and moneys to be made,,,,,,, the faithful that believe blindly and willing to attack ANY that dare deny their UNDENIABLE TRUTH.
I guess as in regards to this particular GOD I'm an Agnostic Doubter that leans to the Atheistic direction.
Just Like those that want to TOUCH or SEE the real GOD to believe I'm the same way, and I saw and Touched ICE a few weeks ago here in HOUSTON hotter than a Mo Fo Texas!

You are right ADAGUY only a fool. 20k years ago areas where Cleveland Detroit, and Chicago reside were under the Great Ice Cap. 10k years ago the Great Lakes were formed and the ice was well up into Canada. Even a fool would know a whole lot of melting has gone on in very recent history. The wink of an eye. And when did it stop melting or has it in fact stopped. Where was the ice 5k or 2k years ago. When the exteemed scientists answer to the past 20,000 years, I might jump on board with the Man's contribution crowd; otherwise, it looks like a hoax from here.

I agree, Here in Northeast Ohio our winters have gotten much milder overall in the 50 years I have been watching it, There have been some exceptions but overall , Yes it has been warmer. The summers seem different also, by this I mean we seem to have more heavy rains and not too many week long drizzles like used to get the gardens growing. Now they seem to just get washed away. Is this apart of a natural cycle or totally caused my man. I don't know and I don't really think the scientists are all that knowing on this either. If this is a natural cycle I would find it hard to believe we have not helped it along some, but to what degree ????

LOL you seem like a very smart FOOL to me. Don't ya love the Global Gaia freaks? Go ahead worship at the alter of Gaia and global warming.
Just as the Christians (no slight to Christians, it's just comparisons), you have predicted the Apocalypse a few times and have had to push the end day. This religion is so similar to all the religions that many denounce it's almost scary with it Zealots of Global Warming acting the same way as those religions you all denounce.
The big major difference, the Global warming religion ends at the holocaust and the Christian one starts a New Beginning.
For those that Do believe in GOD (the Deity) he created the planet to be inhabited forever from what I glean from the teachings of that religion. I'd think He'd not be the sort to change HIS mind, so I'm not too worried about the planet being destroyed by those that he made it for to inhabit forever.

By the way ADAGUY - Check out this Web site, Especially made for fools, from the Ill State Museum. Its pictures, so easy for bloggers. If you dont see any trend in our most recent history, take a blunt object and hit yourself right on the nose and then look at the graphics again.

Ice ages come and go in a cycle lasting tens of thousands of years. The current global warming is not like that. Earth has been warming rapidly in the past several decades, and it is due to warm more rapidly in this century.

thank you SO much. what a great find! whenever you see the naysayers parrot Rush, O'Rilley and Ann Coulter- they always say something like, "it was -342 degrees here today, global warming my rear end" ... they never seem to get that local weather and climate are different things. as i read the article i thought to myself, "this is great, someone is finally explaining it in a way that everyone will understand"
then, i came to the board; i have to say that im dissapointed. reading the first few comments its obvious that some people are SO brainwashed that nothing, short of Hawaii or the Florida Keys being lost will convince them. of course by then, it will be WAY too late. i dont understand how people can politicize the single most important issue facing the entire planet. its NOT about Gore, its NOT about Dubya, its about life itself.

the 2 MOST IMPORTANT questions you can ask yourself regarding this issue:
what if the warnings about global warming are wrong, but we believe and act on them anyway- whats the worst that can happen?
than ask yourself-
what if the warnings are right, but we dont believe and act on them- whats the worst that can happen?

Just like I said this is so like believing in GOD. What if you do and there is no GOD but what if you DON't and there is?

Like I said in another post...
Global warming is a tricky one, the earth does have a number of natural cycles within cycles, many have been happening for thousands of years. But this does not mean we should ignore the human element. It is only common sense that we are definitely contributing negatively and "hence" are making a very messy picture for scientists to interpret. There IS an overlap of both theorys, but overall we as humans are quickly poisening this planet, mainly with petroleum products, de-forstation, and our refuse/waste - expecially non-biodegradable waste. Global warming is really only the tip of the ice berg with regards to our environment.

How do we know that in those 10,000 year cycles there aren't times of both rapid warming and cooling?
Also could it be partly because of the 66 volcanoes that are active right now and the major eruptions such as the 1883 Krakatau Island eruption that was the largest known to man,,,,,, interestingly enough which coincided with the beginning of the Industrial age... coincidence? You throw in Mt. St. Helens, Pinatubo as well as others in Italy and Green land and along the Pacific ring of fire. These 'natural' events spew many times more green house gases than man has made in a single event.

True, I for one am for living clean and preserving our planet, don't get me wrong. We will most likely use Hydrocarbons for many centuries ahead but we should try and in the least reduce that use as far as transportation and eventually not use it at all for transportation or energy use for our houses once we come up with alternate sources.
We tend to only think about Gasoline when we talk about Hydrocarbons, but Crude oil is the building block for most things in our lives for now and won't be going away anytime soon.

Why do you always assume we are just saying what Rush tells us to? We do have brains and can come to our own conclusions, unlike you that have scientists say it's so and you follow along without even considering that it could be something other than Humans causing this trend.

have considered that... but for those of us who are thinking clearly the evidence if undeniable, period!
cite a miniscule minority of the scientific community who dispute the facts all you want. but while you do, remember this .. tobacco companies can STILL find so-called experts who say theyre not convinced smoking is dangerous.

It sounds like a greeting card, but it's a life or death matter: we need to figure out how to live in harmony with our planet. Maybe the greeting card would say "Adapt or die."

Western Europe experienced a general cooling of the climate between the years 1150 and 1460 and a very cold climate between 1560 and 1850 that brought dire consequences to its peoples. The colder weather impacted agriculture, health, economics, social strife, emigration, and even art and literature. Increased glaciation and storms also had a devastating affect on those that lived near glaciers and the sea.
Hmmm I wonder how many SUVs these people had then.
Could it be that mini-cooling and heating trends in short time frames are normal in the larger cycles?

This is what makes "global Warming" so tricky for scientists and lay-people to understand. People tend to think of global warming as natural phenomena or manmade when in fact the two theories are working together creating an unstable unpredictable global weather environment.
