The discovery of a dinosaur family fossilized in its burrow could make us rethink where the animals lived, how they behaved, and even what wiped them out, say researchers.

Interesting, they seem rather large for a burrowing reptile. Seems pretty smart too to have built it with a long entrance and an s-bend..... Not that I don't think reptiles aren't intelligent mind you, i have owned a few that were very intelligent myself.

"The absence of burrowing has been proposed as one reason why dinosaurs didn't make it," says Martin. "You can't use that as a reason now."

It is statements like this that define what is wrong with scientists roday. This guy makes a sweeping statement as if this discovery is going to shake the world. All this discovery is about is a dinosaur that is a little different from his comrades. This does not explain dinosaur extinction and it doesn't greatly increase our knowledge about anything.

Martin has learned to make grandiose and sweeping statements, probably to pump up his own ego and bring more dollars in his direction.

I still have trust in science. It is the scientists who are unreliable.

invest07 - Maybe the pro-Global Warming scientists are unreliable since the contrarians say they are making grandiose, sweeping statements too.

It is probable that there were dinosaurs that fit into every niche of the ecology. This find proves that at least one burrowed and it is probable that others did too, therefore it does call into question the idea that absence of burrowing was THE reason dinosaurs didn't make it. Martin simply asks science to rethink the theory based on new evidence.

Why wouldn't dinosaurs burrow? Just because they weren't mammals doesn't mean they wouldn't have an equally varied array of living strategies. I'm suprised this is "news." Now, if they find a fossilized tree with a dinosaur nest in it with fossilized eggs, that'll be news. :D

One question though, I agree about the burrowing theory but I think it goes to size also. Can you imagine T-Rex burrowing???

Consider the size range of mammals and the size range of burrowing mammals. No burrowing mammal that large, so it would stand to reason that other burrowing dinos would be smaller than the one found. Smaller is also harder to find.

I think the more we look the more we will find. There probably were as many varieties of dinosaur as there are mammals today. Each specialized in it's own way.

Not only would size be an issue in terms of burrowing, but so too would anatomy. Animals with arm-like appendages would be better at digging than those with stubby arms. Dinosaurs probably burrowed for the same reason any creature builds a home...survival. It makes perfect sense that creatures burrowed, especially if they used the underground lair as a place to lay eggs. Though this scientist's statements are somewhat sweeping, he is still on the right path. He challenges others to rethink their old assumptions about dinosaurs.

dang we're still digging up dino bones?

i would have thought that they would want to leave them in the dirt in the hopes of turning into OIL. maybe a couple of million years later mind you, but OIL!

                      heh j/k
