This part sounds really awesome/nuts:
"Alam has experimented on eight-stone Yorkshire pigs, stopping the heart and electrical activity in the brain for up to two hours before slowly replacing the plasma with warm blood and reviving the animals with no apparent long-term effects."
Could you imagine the implications this would have for human space travel if this turns out to be safe for humans? I hope it is and they keep working on this project.

When humans launch a manned mission to Mars it will take many months for the craft to travel both ways - being able to slow down the metabolism in astronauts bodies would have many advantages, such as requiring less food.
A manned mission to Mars or some other distant location may not happen in your lifetime, it may or may not happen in mine, maybe it will happen in my children's lifetime. The point is that whenever it does happen it will have been the result of much research and planning, which we lay the groundwork for now.
