The Bush Administration long ago secured a special place in history for the way in which it distorts, manipulates, or censors science for political ends. But now the habit ââ;¬" and it does seem to be a habitual failing ââ;¬" has come to haunt President Bush himself.

Not a particularly enlightening article. Since when is the head of the CDC a "climate scientist"? The headline does not seem to follow the story imho.

All I have to say about the bushes is one more year. The end is around the corner, if we let another republican back into the White House then it's on us. This is the worse administration ever the only thing they will be remembered for is this stupid war and letting 9/11 happen!

The title isn't ideal, but the head of the CDC *was* commenting on the impacts that climate change will have on the spread of disease and rampant expansion of disease vectors in certain areas that were immune in the past or had limited exposure.

The fact that Bush is muzzling any reputable scientist who is doing their job to improve the world, and in this case protect our country (and the planet) from the spread of deadly diseases, is disturbing.

Though it does plainly point out the importance of the allmighty (but plainly falling) dollar in the mind of BushCo.

The CDC isn't commenting on the science of climate change, the CDC is projecting changes in epidemiological patterns that will result as the climate changes. It's not the same thing. For example, they are predicting that as the temperate zones increase north of the equator, malaria will spread into the southern US states. Try to be a little less concrete.

when the bush administration forces the CDC to cut out 8 of the 14 pages in its report, its pretty obivous the bush administration is trying to suppress the truth.

The bushie regime is just like the USSR. Political commissars everywhere in the government and military.

              The American Police State

A Dallas jury, a week ago, caused a mistrial in the government case against this country's largest Islamic charity. The action raises a defiant fist on the sinking ship of American democracy.....

                cont´d

If we lived in a state where due process and the rule of law could curb the despotism of the Bush administration, this mistrial might be counted a victory. But we do not. The jury may have rejected the government's claim that the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development funneled millions of dollars to Middle Eastern terrorists. It may have acquitted Mohammad el-Mezain, the former chairman of the foundation, of virtually all criminal charges related to funding terrorism (the jury deadlocked on one of the 32 charges against el-Mezain), it may have deadlocked on the charges that had been lodged against four other former leaders of the charity, but don't be fooled. This mistrial will do nothing to impede the administration's ongoing contempt for rule of law. It will do nothing to stop curtailment of our civil liberties and rights. The grim march toward a police state continues.....

You've never visited a nation controlled by a dictatorship have you? Commissars? Secret police? I've spent time in several and you have no idea what you're talking about. Unless you're part of the Weather Underground or other terrorist cell, you have nothing to fear. You're blogging, try doing that from a prison cell in Iran, Syria or North Korea.

As to the trial, it was dead locked, that doesn't mean they were found not guilty. Like the OJ Simpson case, justice isn't always blind. There was and is a trail of money from the leaders of the charity towards Hamas, a terrorist organization supported by Iran, a terrorist nation. The indictment was for the leaders, not the charity itself. When the government tries this case again, and it will, perhaps then we'll see a clearer jury decision. Anyway, this isn't the topic. The topic is a bogus non-news story op-ed piece.

Old news, old story, no story.

The "mountain out of a molehill" is the perfect description for what the Times is trying to do here.

Anyone here with half a brain should know that due to the "cause & effect theory" there should and will also be some beneficial effects on diseases and their control due to the warming.

These are the facts that are being "muzzled".

All we hear about are the downside issues. Gloom and doom facts do nothing to rectify the situation, they only lead to paranoia and panic.

As we have in the past dealt with environmental emergencies successfully, we will so again with this one.

BS political issues aside, I have put on my hard hat, strapped my boots on and I'm ready to get to work!

First off, you're commenting on an op-ed piece as if it's a news story. This isn't it's an opinion of someone at the gray hag. It's so unworthy of news, they didn't even take credit for the piece.

As to global warming, please show me the weather forecast from 30-October-2500 BC, New York area. You can't. Your models were created with very little scientific evidence and at best is a guess. There is a whole list of scientists who feel there is no crisis and no warming. You hear from those claiming to be "experts" but none are meteorologists. That because the church of global warming is a hoax to sell books and cures for a problem that doesn't exist. The planet is over 4 billion years old. Basing 100 years of proof fails to prove anything. 1 degree doesn't even constitute an anomaly.

Well, there are many benefits of global warming and I guess you can't think of any, huh? A comment on malaria it was a thing of the past until Rachel Carson's fraud of a book, "Silent Spring", and the liberals rushed to banish DDT. Hope all you liberal remember that you and your b.s. ideas are responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people, mostly children, because of this ban. Liberal ideas have caused untold harm to millions but even when this is pointed out to them they shrug it off and say, "Oh, well we meant to help," then they continue on their way to causing more death and destruction. What a belief system. lol

Since when is an op-ed piece science. This is clearly a political opinion, it is the New York Times, the old gray hag. The Kyoto Protocol is clearly an attack on North American business. China, India and parts of the former Soviet Union are the largest consumers of coal based power. If this was such a fair and balanced treaty, why wouldn't they also agree to follow the standards they wish to impose on the USA.

Apparently you have yet to read your hero's new book.

Newt Gingrich: A Contract With The Earth.

Geez he has even admited that we are not taking care of God' GReen Earth as the stewards we should be.

Is he trying to win centerist votes? Caved into the pressure? Or recognizes the truth, finally?

Because your neighbour doesn't keep up his yard does that mean you should not keep up yours? You seem to have the new American way of thinking, because somebody else did it I can.

Newt Gingrich isn't my hero. Did you notice he isn't running for Prez. Do you wonder why? Here's the answer, with remarks like that he couldn't get the support, i.e., money to run. So who cares why he made the remark.

He'll have no choice but to run again. There are only turds running now, and he is slightly more shiny and less smelly than the others.
