"A column of smoke rose more than 9,300 feet into the sky and television images showed thick smoke and lava emerging from Llaima, one of the most active of the dozens of volcanos in Chile."

The volcano itself is 9,400 feet tall, which makes one wonder if this eruption was too "weak" to make it out of the cone or if the skills of the reporter were overtaxed.

Interestingly, last year I had a fellow approach me about buying a sizable piece of land in that immediate area--about 3,000,000 acres. It's a fairly isolated region, sparsely populated, one of the last places on Earth where you can still buy such huge estates. It's a beautiful place, and the price was cheap enough (only $12/acre), but that sort of investment is not in my plans.

You don't pay for damage to the oil companies equipment. When there is a perceived problem with the oil supply the market or those who trade on the market usually bid the price of oil higher. A few weeks ago the price of oil dropped because US oil reserves were said to be high. You do you know that oil companies do not set the price of oil, don't you?

Don't they have an environment protection agency down there? Crying out loud. That damn volcano is spewing out megatons of CO2 and other noxious fumes. Probably more than the entire population of the country does in a decade. How's come no one wants to issue a big fine to the volcano God? Or to the park service that failed to prevent this? Or to Jesus, who failed to intervene? If some industry produced that much pollution, you can BET they'd get whacked. Guess maybe the volcano doesn't have a big enough bank account? {8>D)=

Chile is notorious for lax federal regulations. They are getting better though. Come to think of it, they should have done something during the 80's when an ozone hole was sitting over the Patagonia.

Oh well, maybe they will learn from their mistakes...
