"We interpret the find as a case of complicated surgery which only a trained and specialized doctor could have attempted," Graikos said.

There is evidence of trepanation much older than 1,800 years. It's pretty interesting when you consider that an examination of Roman surgical instruments finds an amazing number of them with modern counterparts.

They were so advanced years ago. Interesting find for the medical community. Wonder how far we have come since, this woman had this operation, medically speaking?

    Thanks STONERS, nice find!

Brain surgery, usually simply lobotomies, was performed earlier than that in many parts of the world, and most notably in Madagascar and Java, where stone tools were used. Remember that primitive Man was a hunter, and through butchering he learned a great deal about anatomy. Some peoples had brain surgeons before they had houses.

I'm not so sure this is such a great find, she died, didn't she? What would be great is if they find someone who lived through the operation. lol

There are skulls that show healing from trepanation. Also from drilling and lifting to relieve depressed fractures.

Interesting story --BTW, why does the picture accompanying the story show a gorilla skull? How are pix chosen for stories, and is there a way to make them more appropriate?

I'm wondering if this is where the expression "you need that like you need a hole in the head" came about.
