As well as being able to conduct research on lightning, this laser research can also have military applications. A channel drilled through the atmosphere by the laser-beam, could also provide a means to direct a high-current, high-voltage electrical discharge down the laser channel. The resulting directed plasma, would not be susceptible to reflection as a laser-beam alone would be, and could add considerably to the destructive capability of the combined beam.
