The first thorough federal review of research on how global warming may affect extreme climate events in North America forecasts more drenching rains, parching droughts (especially in the Southwest), intense heat waves and stronger hurricanes if long-lived greenhouse gases continue building in the atmosphere.

Interesting it says hurricanes could become more intense when scientists have been saying there is no connection between "global warming" and hurricane intensity.

I recall they said there would be more hurricanes and they would be more intense. That was after Katrina. Then almost no hurricanes hit the U.S. so they said there is a natural low cycle now. Interesting that they modify their statements as the weather unfolds. Nothing was said about the unusually cold winter and spring worldwide last year. Then they said extremes are a result of CO@ buildup i.e. it could get unusually cold too.

I started out leaning towards the theory of global warming caused by man's burning of fossil fuels. I still take stock in the idea. Large scale calving of Antarctic and Greenland's glaciers and retreat of other glaciers. But then I began to see that "believers" were blind to discussion. I have questioned some of the statements about global warming and instead of getting an answer I am called a "denier", a repuke, Bushie, etc. on and on. I am trained in science and read about weather and climate in the encyclopedia starting when I was 8 years old. I am a contrarian and always question the accepted. This is what scientists do. I was not trained to name call when I hear an opposing view. If I was the leader of this movement, I would most definitely practice what I preach and live like I would expect my followers to. So we have Al Gore as the presumptive leader living a huge energy consuming lifestyle, using 100 times the average American's electrical consumption--

---jetting around in private jets. If I was consumed by trying to convince the public, I would be first to live a energy efficient lifestyle, flying commercial, having all the good energy saving installations in my house, recycling, hybrid economy car, less than 5000 square ft. house, etc. It is really funny that he retro-fitted his mansion when they discovered what his electric bill was and it still burns more KW than before. Meanwhile, unadvertised was Bush's modest ranch house that already had every imaginable energy saving device and method.

I question Gore's openness to debate and his scientific knowledge. However I have watched most of the specials on cable and see the evidence presented. Much of it looks good on the surface. But I wonder about the 30,000 who signed a petition questioning global warming. Certainly some of them must be qualified people. Are they to be just scoffed at as big oil shills or just plain ignorant?

Will global warming beat the dust bowl drought of the 1930's? Or the medieval warming around 800-1200 AD?

I have my doubts about the "hockey stick" curve I saw on the science channel recently. They said measurements up to about 1900 were "proxy" (tree rings, ice cores, etc.). That's fine but then they changed to actual measurements and the spike started. I think they should use the same proxy measurements taken at the same points and frequency as before to keep it consistent. Also the scale of the graph wasn't readable. Of course scale can make any graph look more or less spectacular. I've done it myself.

On another note, the last great ice age ended about 10,000 years ago. There was an abrupt rise in temperature that came about in only 10's of years. The theory that it was caused by sudden release of methane from frozen methane hydrates on the ocean floor was a good one, because methane is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2. But it was dis-proven by analyzing air from Greenland ice cores. So now they don't have a clue what caused it, not even a theory yet.

If global warming does cause the drenching rains and droughts forecast in this article, then some will lose and some will win. What people want is stability. If you are a farmer, you want the same weather patterns you are geared up to handle. People want the weather they remember when they were younger and can handle. Man has encountered drastic changes in climate throughout his time on earth. Ice age, drought, etc. and has adapted to it. However it wasn't easy and Homo Sapiens almost went extinct at one time. So we should try to preclude the possibility of major climate change or at least make plans to adapt.

We should conserve our oil for the time when another ice age descends on Eart (it will happen). Burn it then to warm things up. Or have we already stopped the coming ice age?

Tired ... your posts are all thoughtful and legitimate. I've said before that the CO2 increased readings IN the atmosphere are probably caused by air travel. CO2 generated above 35,000' probably stays up there in those frigid temps.

I had read somewhere recently that measurements began in the atmosphere in 59-60, the same year that Pan AM and TWA incorporated Boeing 707 jets into their fleets. By todays standards, these were dirty burning airplanes.

The CO2 we generate at ground level is heavier than air so it gets used up by the vegetation. CO2 is a colorless vital gas to all living things. It is not this evil, dangerous, gas that is going to ruin the planet

True, I keep hearing about CO2 as pollution. It is harmless and vital to plant life. I breathe it in all the time. If you want pollution, go to Beijing China. A friend of mine spent 6 months there in the 90's and said he hardly ever saw the sun. On another note: cows produce a huge amount of methane which is a far more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2. So we all will have to stop eating beef and drinking milk. Somewhere I read that the biggest producers of methane are TERMITES!! Can't do much about that.

Don't forget that gases dissolve in one another so at some point CO2 distributes evenly in the atmosphere, like sugar in water. It sinks to the bottom but with time dissolves throughout.
