The date they put forward is entirely consistent with archeological evidence found on the site. ut we know that Homer did not write his epic poetry until three centuries had passed. This raises an interesting question, "How was so much detail, so much minutae, preserved during those three centuries?" Any oral communication would have to have been mind-bogglingly detailed, and passed from generation to generation with unerring accuracy. his certainly possible, but the wealth of accurate detail argues in favor of a written account, extant long before Homer was born, and available to the poet. Discovery of such a text would have to rank among the great prizes of the historical investigator.
