lRf, Adrin is right. All that is needed to entirely alter the perceptions of the world vis-a-vis the U.S. is for any one of the other nations to land a man on the moon and bring him back safely before we do again.
December 1972 was the last time a human being walked on the moon. That human being was Eugene Cernan and it was over 35 years ago. Computer Systems, avionics, metallurgy and environmental control systems have advanced immeasurably since then.

Unfortunately for the United States if Obama gets in that will be the end of it for us and we will definitely fall behind the Russians and the Chinese........

The Space Shuttle program will end in 2010. The Constellation program is not scheduled to begin manned flights until 2015. Meanwhile, NASA faces dramatic job reductions among its 21,000 labor force at the close of the Shuttle Program.
The Constellation Program is the follow-on to the Shuttle program. NASA is in the early development stage of the new Ares 1 rocket and the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV). The plan is for them to take astronauts to the moon which will become a staging area for the eventual exploration of Mars.
Barack Obama's early education and K-12 plan package costs about $18 billion per year The early education plan will be paid for by delaying the NASA Constellation Program for five years

if Obama is elected and has his way if we ever do get back to the moon we will find the Russians and Chinese already there, and in all probability with a huge lead in mining and processing the vast amounts of natural resources that the moon is believed to contain.......

$18billion is chump change. Halliburton spends way more of our money in Iraq than that. Someone has to pay for that Iraq abortion, and it looks like NASA has to take a hit. Along with the Veterans Administration. Have you ever heard of a peace dividend? Just one planeload of those disappeared dollars would fund NASA. You want to go to space? Get out of Iraq.

Aside from the many and various technological benefits we derive from space exploration, there are those oddly satisfying "look what we can do" elements. And aside from all THAT, I have serious concerns about letting potential enemy nations get control of the high ground. We have pretty much totally commanded the airspace over any recent conflict areas. Allowing someone else to get command of space would be very, very foolish.

The United States is on the verge of becoming an economic basket-case. We have encouraged American companies to move manufacturing capabilities overseas, and we have done virtually nothing to create an environment which rewards those who help Americans continue to be the world's most productive people. Our stores are filled with goods made in China, we drive Japanese, Korean, and German automobiles, we wear red, white and blue garments from Tommy Hilfiger which are all made in Asia, and we have shuttered our own factories. We provide billions in foreign aid to nations which despise us. We have spent over a TRILLION dollars in Iraq, and we cannot even afford decent medical care for the veterans of that unfortunate conflict. We borrowed another $160 billion from the Chinese to give our citizens a "tax rebate."
Where are we supposed to get the money for a renewed space program when we cannot control our spending in any other area?

I live in (and have contributed to) the nation which has done more to advance the cause of human freedom than any other, while it also provided unprecedented economic opportunities and physical comforts to its people. But I am very worried about the mismanagement of that nation and the squandering of its resources which has occurred in recent years.
But when I question where the resources will come from for space exploration, when so much has been wasted, you respond with a dismissal that such concerns are no more than "gloom and doom."
If that is so, why don't you address my question, "Where are we supposed to get the money for a renewed space program when we cannot control our spending in any other area?"

jmarks - how right you are! Seems like Neil Armstrong was the only one to be known for the "moonwalk". Just like that lady teacher in space - Amy Winehouse! (Damn, she's so ugly she belongs in outer space.)

Oh my God heaven forbid , after all the Space Race feeds all the hungry children , supplies food for all and makes life for everyone so fulfilling .
Finding Ice or Salt on Mars , they don't even know which one , has brought insight as to how to cure all illnesses and put a damper on high Oil prices thus relieving the economic worries all over .
And you hear of Russia and China sending probes to other planets all the time in the news daily , oops that is America or Great Brittan .

WELL MR. ALDRIN--HOW DO YOU EXPECT US TO FINANCE THIS???
MAKE MORE MONEY AT THE MINT// SO OUR DOLLAR CAN SHRINK SOME MORE...
PERHAPS YOU CAN ASK THE RICHEST IN THE WORLD TO FINANCE IT...
WITH THE COMING COLLAPSE OF THIS COUNTRY--WE CAN NOT AFFORD THIS ANY MORE..
WE HAVE TOO MANY PEOPLE WITHOUT HEALTH INS..HOW ABOUT HELPING THEM..YOU KNOW =-OUR OWN AMERICAN PEOPLE..
HOW ABOUT MAKING SURE ALL OUR WOUNDED VETERANS HAVE GOOD CARE--SEEING THEY GOT THAT WAY DEFENDING THIS COUNTRY..
THERE ARE MANY OTHER THINGS WE NEED THIS MONEY FOR..
THEN AGAIN MAYBE CHINA WILL FINANCE IT--THEY HAVE ALL OUR ONEY FROM THE OUTSOURCED JOBS OUR COMPANYS SENT THERE..

Hmmmmmmmm. Wonder how much of our debt China would forgo if we put a Chinese astronaut on the moon? That and all the rocks he could carry home. Instead of an American flag, how much would Walmart pay for a Walmart banner?
Yeah! Like the bowl games. We can have the Exxon Mobil Space Shuttle. The Halliburton booster rockets and space suits. The possibilities are endless!

If another country moves ahead that has a psychopathic dictator, they will definitely beat us to "star wars" and use it on us.
We can't afford *not* to stay in the space race. We will have to work on controlling our population as a way to cut down the number of mouths that need feeding. That is how China took a giant leap out of the 3rd world.
Oh, and China settled on English for their national language, so a higher percentage of their citizens speaks English than Americans.

Gee,
I wonder?
There have been many who claim the the moon-landing was faked. There have many books and films made debunking the claim that man has walked on the moon.
Now I am one that remembers the historic event...when the whole world was tuned in and watched Ohioan Neil Armstrong take those first steps and utter the phrase "One small step for man..one giant leap for mankind." The feeling I and billions others had was a feeling you remember all your life. While I think that it is important for us to continue with space exploration, we as a country find ourselves in a much different situation than what we were during the 60's.
How much of our money that has been wasted on this so-called war on terror could have been used not only for this but for all the other problems facing our country? Can all of you imagine what we as a nation could have been done with all the money spent enriching this president's friends?

Researchers calculated the Love numbers from data gathered by the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment, using retroreflectors left on the Moon's surface 30 years ago by U.S. and Russian missions.
A laser pulse is fired from Earth to the Moon, bounced by a reflector and returned back to Earth. The round-trip travel time gives the distance between the two bodies with accuracy better than 2 centimeters (.8 inches).

i've worked the Constellation program. it's troublesome how much work there is to do, who is doing it, and how much of it they are taking on at one time.
i can't even imagine what it took for these old-timers to get the apollo program off the ground with the technology they had back then, and how much that we take for granted they did by hand.
