Solution, or Mess? A Milk Jug for a Green Earth »
Posted by: TechnologyExpert 1 month, 3 weeks agoA simple change to the design of the gallon milk jug, adopted by Wal-Mart and Costco, seems made for the times. The jugs are cheaper to ship and better for the environment, the milk is fresher when it arrives in stores, and it costs less. What's not to like? Plenty, as it turns out.

It's a toss up for me. When Costco rolled these out a couple months ago, I H-A-T-E-D them because:
1. They ALWAYS spilled in the beginning and
2. They were very difficult to open at first
I was about to complain to management but then they took them off the shelves and now they have the original milk cartons again!
The good news is that they're fresher (supposedly) and cheaper and cost less. The bad news is they're annoying to use.

I work at a factory, and can understand why the large retailers would want to make this kind of change. Saving space might result in lower prices in milk to the consumers, but will most likely mean bigger profits to the retailers.
Besides, cardboard should be fairly easy for a large retailer like Wal-Mart to recycle. After all, they most likely have a deal with a recycling company for the used cardboard (which gives them more money). I work for a major plastics manufacturer, and we recycle our scrap cardboard, which turns into profit sharing for me. I cannot see why Wal-Mart wouldn't do the same thing.
